Violin Faculty

Yi-Hsiu Liu 

 

A native of Taiwan, Yi-Hsiu Liu is an active solo, chamber, and orchestral violinist.  Began violin lessons at age 7, her former teachers include Chun-Ning Lee, Wei-Chung Chiang, and Cheng-Tu Su. Ms. Liu was the recipient of the Distinguished Scholarship of the Taiwan National Science Council in 2002 for her research on Taipei Symphony Orchestra.  Ms. Liu received her Master of Music Degree from The Boston Conservatory where she was a student of Irina Muresanu, and her Doctorate of Musical Arts in Violin Performance from Boston University where she was a student of Peter Zazofsky. 

Ms. Liu’s orchestral engagements has brought her to Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Australia, Mexico, and Japan. She has also performed as both principal and section violinist in numerous orchestras in the greater Boston area, including: National Repertory Orchestra, The Boston Chamber Orchestra, Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of Indian Hill, Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra, and Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra.

One of the founding faculty members of Youth&Muse International Music Festival in Boston, Ms. Liu is passionate about music education and enjoys working with young musicians. She was a faculty at Concord Conservatory of Music (2010-2013) and Cambridge Center of Adult Education (2008-2013). Currently resides in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Ms. Liu teaches at the Department of Music of National Pingtung University and performs regularly with Kaohsiung Symphony Orchestra.



 

 

Kenneth Mok 

Kenneth Mok received a Master of Music in Violin Performance from The Boston Conservatory under the tutelage of Irina Muresanu, Ronan Lefkowitz, and Markus Placci. He completed his Bachelor of Music at Hong Kong Baptist University and studied with Lau Yin Pui at the Central Conservatory of Music at Beijing in an exchange program.  He was awarded a diploma in Violin Performance by the Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music. Recently, he completed the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Music Educator/Teaching Artist (META) fellowship program and joined the violin faculty at the University of Massachusetts (Boston) as the string coordinator.

 

As an active musician in the New England area, Kenneth’s recent leading roles include concertmaster of Calliope and second principle of Unitas Ensemble, Video Game Orchestra, and the Boston Chamber Orchestra. He has appeared as a soloist with orchestras including Collegium Musicum Hong Kong, Boston Chamber Orchestra, U. Mass Boston Chamber Orchestra, and Hong Kong Baptist University Orchestra. Kenneth has performed in numerous national and international locations including Boston, New York, Las Vegas, Beijing (China), Fukuoka (Japan) and London.

Karl Ørvik 

Karl Ørvik, violin and viola, has appeared in solo and chamber music recitals throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, Norway and South Korea.  He has been a concerto soloist with the Bangor, Racine and Green Bay Civic symphonies, and has extensive experience as a concertmaster and section player with numerous orchestras in New England and the Midwest.  Mr. Ørvik is a founding member of Trio Klaritas, who made their Carnegie Hall debut in January of 2018, and also performs as the violinist of Stonehill College’s faculty ensemble, the Stonehill Trio. In addition to his teaching position at Stonehill, he is a long-time member of the string faculty at the Community Music Center of Boston, where he was the recipient of the 2017 Marilla MacDill Prize for Teaching Excellence.  In the summers he teaches at the Swannanoah Chamber Music Workshop in North Carolina, the Point Counterpoint music festival in Vermont and the Youth and Muse festival in Boston. He has been published in the ASTA Journal, and is the author of New Scale Method, an innovative scale method book for advanced violinists and violists.  A native of Canada, Mr. Ørvik has studied with many distinguished musicians, including Roman Totenberg, Stephen Majeske and Calvin Wiersma, and members of the Muir, Cleveland, Cavani, Fine Arts and Portland string quartets.  He holds performance degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and Lawrence University, and in January of 2012 he received his DMA from Boston University.

 

 

Angel Valchinov 

Dr. Angel Valchinov is a violin soloist, concertmaster, chamber musician, and teacher. Currently performing as a soloist with orchestras in the U.S. and Europe, Dr. Valchinov plays a wide-ranging repertoire. A recent performance highlight was H. W. Ernst's Six Polyphonic Etudes. An avid recitalist and chamber musician, he recently performed with the Turtle Island Quartet in Boston's Jordan Hall. Dr. Valchinov serves as concertmaster of several orchestras in the Boston area, including Claflin Hill Symphony, Boston Chamber Orchestra and Carlisle Chamber Orchestra. He is also a member of the String Faculties at Bunker Hill Community College and Northern Essex Commuity College, and he is the String Department Chair at the Concord Conservatory of Music. In addition, he has a large private teaching studio. In the summer, Dr. Valchinov teachers at the Atlantic Music Festival at Colby College, Waterville, Maine, and the Youth & Muse Music Festival in Boston. He is the subject of a documentary by Bulgarian national television, and he has been featured on a number of television and radio stations across the U.S. A third generation musician, Dr. Valchinov regularly performs with his wife, violist Dr. Chen Lin, and other family members, and he is a reader at his beloved Orthodox Church in Allston, MA.
